The focus this term in our chess programme has been on gaining position on the board for tactical advantage. All the clubs have performed well. A number of Gold, Silver and Bronze Carlsens have been won and – for the very first time – Mr Viv, our chess teacher, has awarded a Chess Magnus.
One of the harder concepts to grasp in chess is the idea of positioning. The beginner is told that gaining control of the middle of the board early in the game gives a player a material advantage, but it isn’t always immediately obvious.
