Year 5 went down to the banks of the river Thames to explore its ecology, its history and its impact on the city of London. Felicity and Michael from Thames Explorer Trust were excellent guides and educators. Year 5 learnt all about the history of the river. This covered the first settlements 6000 years ago to the Big Stink in the Victorian times and the river being declared the cleanest river running through a city in the world in 2012.
The pupils then went down and waded through the river’s shallows and searched the banks for tiny invertebrates and historical objects, which were then discussed together. They ended the day by measuring the pH of the water, which surprised them greatly. It was a wonderful trip – a big thank you to the Thames Explorer Trust.
Year 6 visit Buddhist temple
Year 6 travelled to the Buddhapadipa Temple in Wimbledon to gain a greater understanding of the beliefs and practises of Buddhism. Whilst there, they were fortunate enough to meet a Buddhist monk. He explained to them the origins of the religion, taught them meditation and answered various questions that the pupils had. He was really impressed with their knowledge and their interest in the deeper beliefs of reincarnation and enlightenment.
An electric afternoon in Year 4
Year 4 had a great afternoon exploring electricity and making circuits. Everyone was able to connect a battery to a lightbulb and some groups were able to extend their circuits. A fantastic STEAM lesson!
Year 4 tag rugby v Garden House School
Year 4 travelled to Garden House School to play in three tag rugby fixtures. The Red team won their match 12-6. The Blue team drew 12-12. The Yellow team won their match 5-3. It was excellent to see the progress Year 4 had made from last week as they displayed some excellent handling and defence. Well done to everyone for a great afternoon of rugby.
